FARGO (AP) - Fargo-based Scheels plans to break ground Friday in Sparks, Nev., on what the company says will be the world's largest all-sports store.The 248,000-square-foot store is expected to open in October 2008 with more than 300 employees.Scheels opened a Fargo store and adjacent corporate headquarters in July 2006. The project included nearly 200,000 square feet of retail space and cost about $40 million.Special attractions at the Sparks store will include two 16,000-gallon aquariums, a 35-foot-tall wildlife taxidermy mountain and a 16-car Ferris wheel. .

The Rock Island-based company has a licensing agreement with the Chicago Cubs organization to run the store. Collins explained that his company has about 40 stores across the country representing various teams including the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets. We specialize in managing brick-and-mortar stores, said Collins, president of the 22-year-old company.
Thoughts Of Sons Steadied Hostage
Thursday afternoon, the 57-year-old saw the flip side of law enforcement when he became one of five victims held hostage at gunpoint inside his workplace, Shooting Sports Inc. at 7811 N. Dale Mabry Highway. The 10-hour standoff between Hillsborough County deputies and Jeffrey Lane Dudney, 43, ended at 3 a.m. Friday when Dudney fatally shot himself. Dudney had rented a .40-caliber semiautomatic weapon and used it on the range before walking back into the store to tell Little he was going to steal it, Little said Saturday. No one tried to stop him, but seconds later Dudney decided to take hostages. He told the hostages he wanted to kill himself to avoid prison. Two weeks ago, Tampa police charged him with three counts of attempted murder after a road-rage incident in which he fired a gun at another vehicle.

Springfield sports store owner receives sales award
A Springfield business owner was recently recognized at the Play It Again Sports National Conference and Tradeshow, Grassroots Newswire reported. Jeff Salyers, owner of Play It Again Sports in Springfield, received a sales excellence award at the Las Vegas event. Play It Again Sports has more than 400 North America locations that are individually owned and operated, The store sells used and new sports and fitness gear. .
