CBS Acquires High School Sports Net

CBS has acquired MaxPreps, an online high school sports network. The network will become a unit of CBS-owned CSTV (College Sports Television). The deal was announced by Brian Bedol, president and CEO of CSTV.

"From the professional sports covered by CBS Sports and CBS Sportsline to the collegiate athletics covered by CSTV," Bedol said, "this acquisition expands CBS's portfolio of sports programming and brings a spirited community of athletes and a highly desirable demographic into our reach."

MaxPreps provides information on nearly 80,000 high school football and more than 500,000 high school basketball games played annually. It has more than 1 million high school athletes registered in its database.

"Sports fans and participants are among the greatest beneficiaries of the advancements in video delivery technology," Bedol said.

GRILLO: Talbott's high school days memorable

And of course, in the spring they completed high school sports most improbable hat trick by winning the baseball championship.

When you reflect on remarkable prep stories such as "Hoosiers" and "Remember the Titans", it doesn't take much to think that the Blackbirds have been vastly unrecognized.

That may be about to change.

"Someone's working on a book to detail what happened that year," Talbbott said. "It will be something for the school and the former players and the people of Rocky Mount. Something to really look back on and cherish. That was something very, very special, to think about winning a state championship in three sports."

Danny gave up basketball, but he excelled in football and baseball once he arrived at the University of North Carolina.

Sports Update: Nor'Easter cancels most game; locals win at Frosh ...

The Nor'easter, which hit the area full force Sunday night and was expected to continue throughout today, has already affected many of the area high school sports events slated for April 16.

Barrington, East Providence and Seekonk postponed nearly all of their scheduled games for today.

The Challenge Cup golf event for high schoolers moves to tomorrow with a 7:30 a.m. tee off at Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth. Barrington and East Providence are in the event.

Barrington's girls' lacrosse game at Portsmouth moves from today to Tuesday with an 11 a.m. start time.

Only the Barrington boys' laxers are holding out hope of playing their game against the Wheeler School at its regularly scheduled time of 4:15 this afternoon at the Wheeler Farm in Rehoboth.

Board to discuss contraceptives in high schools

LAS CRUCES — Las Cruces school leaders on Tuesday will consider the possibility of dispensing contraception on Las Cruces high school campuses in an effort to reduce the county's high teen pregnancy rate.

During their regular meeting, school board members will consider approval of a measure that will allow school-based health centers to provide services, including exams, sports physicals, immunizations, mental health screenings, evaluation and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and family planning services.

The family planning services may include abstinence awareness and education as well as dispensing contraceptives. Earlier this year, the board adopted a state-recommended sexual education program which presents information on contraception and sexual health at age-appropriate levels.

Yahoo! Wants to get Closer to Teenage Boys

When there's money to be made, lots of things become mainstream. In the past two years, the sports media industry has recognized the importance -- but especially the money to be made -- in paying attention to college recruiting. At the same time, there seems to be a wariness at embracing the recruiting sites too closely.ESPN created its Scouts, Inc. group to track recruiting and evaluate high school talent for football and now basketball. With the weight of the 800 pound gorilla in sports media behind it, to cross-promote on ESPN.com and the various TV channels, it has gained prominence. All the while, though, the whole recruiting venture is treated like a separate company that is merely a contractor for ESPN.Fox Interactive Media bought Scout.com in August 2005. The price tag was a reported $60 million.
