Better Late Than Never: Spring Goes Off In The East

If you live back East you've already suffered through one of the worst seasons in history. The snow and cold temps came late, so late that many resorts delayed their openings and the snow was grim through January. That's fine if you were able to escape out west or had a passion for golf, but it sucked, seriously sucked, if you were a skier.

What a difference several months can make. Those with patience were blessed – and continue to be blessed – with one of the best spring skiing seasons in memory. Hey, when it comes to Eastern skiing when it is bad, it's really bad and when it's good it's April 2007.

And is it good! So good in fact that several resorts are keeping things rocking for a bit longer. The two most recent announcements come from our friends at Okemo and Wildcat.

Sweeny continues to dominate

Lisa Sweeney is the reigning Patriot League Pitcher of the Year in softball. The Lehigh University sophomore may get Player of the Year votes from the Lafayette coach.

Sweeney, a Rancocas Valley High School graduate, was the winning pitcher in two of four games Lehigh swept from its area rival last weekend. She worked the first three innings of a 17-1 victory shortened to five innings by NCAA softball's eight-run rule.

She hit a two-run single in the first inning and a two-run homer in the third to help Lehigh build its margin. The victory also made Lehigh the first Patriot program to win 200 softball games all-time.

The next day, the teams met for another twinbill. Sweeney got the ball for the first game and Lehigh was a 10-1 winner in six innings.
